What Are Rivets? Rivets are a type of permanent mechanical fastener used to join two or more materials, typically metal or other rigid materials. They consist of a smooth cylindrical shaft with a head on one end. During installation, the rivet is inserted into a pre-drilled hole, and the opposite end is deformed or "bucked" to create a second head, securing the materials together. Rivets are known for their strength and reliability, making them ideal for applications where welding or screws might not be suitable, such as in aircraft, bridges, and building structures. They come in various sizes and materials, including aluminum, steel, and copper, each chosen based on the specific requirements of the application, such as load-bearing capacity, resistance to corrosion, and compatibility with the materials being joined.
